If you have ever watched Grey’s Anatomy, you might have the impression that Seattle is all about rain and medical emergencies. Well, it might drizzle a lot, but that doesn’t mean that the sun doesn’t ever shine or that there isn't so much more to this magical city. Whether you’re looking for adventures in nature or a more low-key, relaxing time, West Seattle is the perfect place to spend time in the summer. So if you’re wanting to discover new activities around the city, look no further, there are so many hidden treasures in this part of Seattle.

1. Soak up the sun at Alki Beach

No visit to West Seattle is complete without a stop at Alki Beach. It may not be full of picturesque white coastal sands, but its unique and beautiful two-mile stretch of sand offers diverse beach activities such as canoeing, beach volleyball, sunbathing, fishing, crabbing, and much more. Our favorite is when the tide is low and getting to explore all the tidepools. And while you’re engaging in these activities you can enjoy the best scenic views that West Seattle has to offer. The Alki Beach trail is paved, perfect for two things: bike rides and skateboarding. Blast your Bluetooth speakers and enjoy your ride. In case you get hungry, there are plenty of waterfront eateries to choose from.

As the sun sets and the cool evening approaches, you and your loved ones can cuddle up around one of the fire pits for a bonfire on the beach. If a bonfire isn’t for you, take a walk on the Alki beach trail to see the Alki Point Lighthouse, which is a Coast Guard lighthouse that is over a century old and still functioning.

Our final and most touching reason that makes Alki Beach so special is that it’s the gateway to Seattle and where the first settlers in Seattle landed.

2. Hit the Trails at the Schmitz Preserve Park

Summer in West Seattle just wouldn’t be summer without some hiking. We love the 1.7-mile hike at Schmitz Preserve Park, especially its greenery, and stunning old-growth trees (one of the last few remaining old growth forests in Seattle). The park opens at 6 am, which is perfect for our fellow early birds. Before you get all up and running, make sure you print a trail map because there are no trail signs in the park. Expect to see some of the largest conifers in the world and a huge number of frisky squirrels.

3. Indulge in ice cream at Husky Deli

If there’s one thing you absolutely must do this summer, it’s visit Husky Deli. For 90 years, this family-owned establishment has been bringing joy to West Seattle with all the ice cream flavors you could want. The Miller family has owned and operated it since 1932. Husky Deli is an integral part of the fabric of West Seattle and is definitely a staple in the neighborhood. In fact, many youth teams make it part of their schedule to pay a visit to Husky Deli on game days.

4. Explore the parks and playgrounds

If you aren’t in the mood for a beach day, how about enjoying a park? Lincoln Park, located on the coast near Gatewood, is all about scenery. It’s one of the best places to go out as a family because it’s full of great picnic spaces and has a playground that will leave your kids exhausted. Want to spend some alone time with your thoughts? The woods here are just the remedy.

So what makes Lincoln Park unique? It is the best place to enjoy a swim in Seattle’s only heated saltwater pool. The Colman Pool comes with a water slide and a deep-end. Note: any visitors under the age of eighteen have to pass a swimming test before being allowed in the deep end.

The sculpture section at the north end of the park is great. The Driftwood Sculpture Walk boasts permanent wooden sculptures alongside temporary ones made by park visitors. Feeling inspired already? There is more than enough driftwood for you to sculpt something of your own. The sculpture section is also the quietest and most serene spot, making it a favorite for dog owners. So, if you want to bring your furry friend along, just ensure you can clean up after them and always watch your step.

Another interesting park is a garden that celebrates the many Chinese immigrants who have settled in Seattle. The Seattle Chinese Garden at South Seattle College is a must-see to experience the beauty of Chinese culture. It’s not only a sign of West Seattle’s hospitable nature but also a beautiful sight to behold. Just as New York has the Statue of Liberty from France, West Seattle has the Chinese Garden as a monument to forge the relations between Seattle and Chongqing, a sister city in China. If you want to experience tranquility, Asian culture, and see the use of water, stone, plants, and architecture in intriguing and beautiful ways, the Seattle Chinese Garden awaits.

5. Watch the sunset

What better way to wrap up your summer day than to watch the sunset? Our favorite spots to unwind and see the beautiful cotton-candy skies are Alki Beach and Lincoln Park. Another gem is Me-Kwa-Mooks Park. There are picnic tables and benches throughout for you to just sit down, relax, and enjoy. The land is part of the homestead where the pioneers of Seattle, Ferdinand and Emma Schmitz, once lived. So how cool to watch the sunset and imagine how they felt?

6. Enjoy music

West Seattle hosts some live music with more coming back in June. If you are a fan of outdoor music, check out West Seattle Brewing for delicious craft beer and live music. New cocktail bar, Otter on the Rocks, recently brought music to its space with open mic nights and jazz. We also recommend a visit to The Spot and mark some upcoming performances on your calendar.

7. Seek adventure at festivals

The Summer Fest is one of the biggest West Seattle festivals and this year it will take place from July 15th to July 17th with a special Summer Fest Eve event for locals on the 14th. So if you want to enjoy the best of West Seattle, this festival is for you.

Shortly after, from July 23rd to July 24th, art lovers can unite at the Alki Art Fair. It’s a must-attend event for anyone seeking quality artwork or the opportunity to engage with talented artists. It's all about enjoying creative works with picturesque scenery in the background.

Mark your calendars for July 23rd for the West Seattle Grand Parade, which celebrates the community of West Seattle. From clowns and pirates to floats and pageantry, it’s a fun-filled day for the whole family and has been occurring annually since 1935.

8. Wander around the West Seattle Art Walk

The West Seattle Art Walk features local artists and music on the second Thursday of each month from 5 pm to 8 pm. Sponsored by local businesses, it’s a great way to spend the summer evenings, taking advantage of extended happy hours, enjoying discounted food and beverages while listening to music, and appreciating local art.

9. Keep cool in the pool

Of course, we can’t list summer activities without mentioning pools. Lincoln Park has the only heated saltwater pool in the city and has incredible views You can swim and enjoy The Sound and the Olympic Mountains. Does it get any better than that?
