West Seattle is truly a gem in the city of Seattle. Just a few miles from downtown Seattle, West Seattle has amazing views of Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains, plus easy access to some of Seattle's best parks and outdoor activities. West Seattle has so many things to do, and it is so hard to narrow down, but if you had asked us our favorites, we'd say the best activities are these:

1. Explore Alki Beach

One of the most famous spots (and our favorite) in West Seattle would probably be Alki Beach. Honestly, a great beach destination should always be on top of everyone’s list, right? This two-mile stretch of sand has stunning views of the downtown Seattle skyline and space needle, Elliott Bay, and the Olympic Mountains, giving you the ultimate swim (if you can brave the chill) with a view experience. If you’re not feeling a swim, there's also a lively beachfront promenade with shops, restaurants, and bars that you could explore as well. Last but not least, the Alki Trail. A 5.5 mile trail that largely sits adjacent to the water with views in every way. Run, ride your bike or skateboard, rollerblade, and enjoy the scenery. Alki Beach is the perfect place for that morning walk or afternoon picnic.

2. Visit the West Seattle Farmers Market

The West Seattle Farmers Market is one of the best in the city and one of the few that operate year-round. With a wide variety of local produce, flowers, and artisan goods, this is an ongoing event that happens every Sunday, on California Avenue between Alaska St and Oregon St. from 10 am and 2 pm - what better way to start your day? We love visiting it as much as we can to support local vendors and get some great eco-friendly products. It’s such a staple in the West Seattle community that you’ll definitely run into neighbors or friends while doing your shopping. There’s lots of street parking that’s free on Sundays. So if you’re in West Seattle on a Sunday, make sure to visit to find local food vendors, unique gifts, souvenirs, and a lot more.

3. Hike Through Lincoln Park

You’ve probably already heard about Lincoln Park and we definitely recommend hiking here because there are great activities for the whole family. This is one of Seattle’s beautiful, forested parks with miles of hiking trails, walking paths, and bike trails. It’s so unique with its breathtaking views of Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains. It is actually a multi-purpose park so you’ll also find picnic grounds, a playground, playfields, and even a public outdoor heated saltwater pool and bathhouse. Outdoor activities, family-friendly places, and great views? What else would you look for in a park?

4. Check Out the Seattle Skyline

West Seattle has some of the best views of the Seattle skyline. Head to Alki Point or any of the other viewpoint parks in the neighborhood for amazing panoramic views of the city and a breath of fresh air. Some of our other favorites are Harbor Ave Vista Point, Hamilton Viewpoint Park, Admiral Viewpoint Park, and Jack Block Park. Take a moment there to be present and enjoy the absolutely beautiful views.

5. Test your bowling skills at West Seattle Bowl

It’s a great local place to hang out with friends and family for bowling and socialization. West Seattle Bowl has 32 lanes (with bumpers for your kids or those of us who are a little less skilled), a restaurant offering comfort food and brews called Highstrike Pub, and now a relatively new, beach-themed tiki bar, Three 9 Lounge. It’s not only a great place to bring your family and friends but the space can also be used for charity bowling events.

6. Ride a Ferry, or Water Taxi

One of the best ways to experience Seattle is from the water. West Seattle is home to a water taxi stop at Seacrest Park that goes directly downtown to Pier 50. It also has a Washington State Ferries terminal at Fauntleroy, which offers ferry services to/from Vashon Island and Southworth. Ferry and water taxi rides are a great way to relax and take in the stunning views of the mountains, city, and Puget Sound.

7. Shop Local

We have a few favorite shopping districts we like to explore in West Seattle. The Junction is the heart and soul of West Seattle housing many iconic locales. The Admiral District is a charming shopping area in the northern part of West Seattle with a wide variety of independent shops and restaurants. Between the Junction and the Admiral District along California Ave, you’ll find a bunch of great places worth checking out. Also, the Morgan Junction has one of our favorite independent bookstores just a block away along with eateries and more.

8. Eat at Local Restaurants

West Seattle is home to a number of amazing local restaurants, pubs, and cafes. Some of our favorites include Grillbird, Flying Apron, Lady Jaye, Bakery Nouveau, Haymaker, Il Nido, Srivilai Thai, and many more. If you’re looking for the best coffee in West Seattle, you can find our favorites here.

9. Drink at Local Bars

West Seattle has a lively bar scene, with something to offer for everyone. For craft beer lovers, check out Ounces, The Beer Junction, or sit outside when the weather is nice and enjoy a beer at West Seattle Brewing Company on Alki Beach. Or, enjoy a cocktail at one of the neighborhood cocktail bars, like The Nook, Otter on the Rocks, Lady Jaye, or speakeasies like The Alley and In the Heart.

10. Go for a Run or Walk

West Seattle is a great place to get some exercise in the outdoors. There are numerous parks and green spaces, including Alki Beach Park, which is perfect for a leisurely stroll or a vigorous run. One of our favorite spots is Schmitz Park, which is one of the last stands of old-growth forest in the city. With views of Puget Sound in the distance, you’ll be sure to be able to get some peace in nature.

West Seattle is a great neighborhood for anyone looking for a little bit of everything. With its stunning views, easy access to parks and outdoor activities, and lively bar and restaurant scene, West Seattle has something for everyone without having to be in the city center. So, next time you're in Seattle, make sure to visit as many places as you can - or maybe don’t, we wouldn’t say no to a lazy day at Alki Beach.
